ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) – A 43-year-old St. Cloud man had a short trip to jail Monday after being arrested for assault in connection with a fight on the roof of the Stearns County Jail, according to police.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fight at about 3:17 p.m. Monday on the roof of the Stearns County Jail. Officers responded and found a 23-year-old male victim with a three to four inch cut on his forehead who also had a tooth knocked out.
The victim and witnesses identified the assailant as Warren Smith.
Police said a group of construction workers were re-roofing the jail building when the incident happened. The victim and the Smith were working on the project as temporary employees working through an employment agency. The two got into a verbal altercation that eventually turned physical, police said.
Authorities said Smith hit the victim in the face with a rake used for spreading rocks as part of the project. Smith was arrested and booked into the Stearns County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault.
