MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 26-year-old Red Lake man was sentenced for assaulting a woman on the Red Lake Indian Reservation with a shovel.

According to the United States Attorney’s office, Myron Lee Jones, Jr. was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison on one count of assault resulting in bodily harm. United States District Chief Judge Michael J. Davis also ordered Jones to pay $213.30 in restitution

On August 23, 2009, Jones swung a shovel during a fight amongst several young adults. A female victim was struck in the back of the head. Her injury required 20 interior and exterior stitches.

Because the Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federal-jurisdiction reservation, this case was investigated by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
