APPLE VALLEY, Minn. (WCCO) — A 34-year-old Apple Valley woman has been charged with allegedly beating her daughter with an extension cord and flip flops because she joined a social media website, according to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office.
Valerie Elaine Moore faces one gross misdemeanor count of malicious punishment of a child stemming from the July 25 incident.
According to the criminal complaint, Apple Valley police responded to the residence to take a runaway report concerning a 13-year-old girl. Police soon located the girl.
The girl then reported to police that she left her house after her mother, Moore, struck her multiple times with an extension cord and a shoe. She said Moore became upset and began yelling at her when she opened a social networking account. Then, Moore allegedly began beating the girl with an extension cord and later a flip flop shoe, according to the complaint.
When Moore left the room, the girl changed clothes, tied bed sheets together and climbed out the window.
When later speaking with the victim, police observed two visible lacerations to her upper left quadriceps and injuries to both arms, both sides of her body, her back and left leg. The injuries consisted of raised welts, lacerations and abrasions. Police believe the injuries were consistent with being struck by an extension cord, the complaint said.
Moore admitted to police that she struck the girl with an extension cord and a shoe, the complaint said.
If convicted, Moore could face up to a year in prison and/or $3,000 fine.
