MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A body found in a burned home in north Minneapolis is now under investigation as a possible homicide.
The blaze started on the 3800 block of Humboldt Avenue North around 8:15 p.m. Friday night.
Neighbor Jordan Ward witnessed the fire.
“I looked and there was just a bunch of smoke,” Ward said.
The call for help started like any other after neighbors saw fire coming out of the home at 3838 Humboldt Ave.
“They were breaking down the windows and channeling all this dark smoke out,” said neighbor Susan Bendickson.
According to Minneapolis Police Sgt. Steven McCarty, once crews put the flames out firefighters soon found more than just a burned shell of a home.
“There was a body that was found inside when firefighters got there,” McCarty said.
Investigators also saw that smoke or flames were not the likely cause of death.
“There was trauma to the body that indicated that a homicide most likely occurred,” said McCarty.
“That’s frightening, actually,” Bendickson said.
The fire burned just one home, but the shock of the investigation is now being felt all along Humboldt Avenue.
“I mean this is like almost Camden here, and it’s a fairly quiet neighborhood. We haven’t had anything like that since I’ve been here,” she said.
Investigators are following up on leads for suspects. They do not think the public is at risk, but they are asking anyone with information to give their tips line a call at 612-692-TIPS (8477).
The victim’s name has not been released.
