MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Twin Cities boy hit by a suspected drunk driver at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has been released from the hospital.

The family released a statement Friday that Zachery Drew was discharged from Gillette Children’s Hospital following successful treatment and will continue his recovery at home.

Drew was heading to the airport to greet his father, who was returning from military duty in Iraq.

Drew was treated for a broken leg, nose and jaw and could need reconstructive surgery.

Drew was hit by a car allegedly being driven by a 61-year-old man from St. Paul, later identified as Tommy Rodriguez. The incident happened at the green short-term parking ramp at the airport. Authorities said they could smell alcohol on his breath at the time of the accident, but there are no toxicology results yet as to where Rodriguez had actually been drinking or if he was impaired at the time of the accident. Rodriguez was arrested for criminal vehicular operation but has been released from jail, and criminal charges are pending.

Those interested in updates on Drew’s progress can visit his CaringBridge page. A benefit has also been set up to help pay for his medical expenses during the recovery process.
