MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – At the University of Minnesota’s Homecoming Weekend, students and visitors are being met with extra security. A campus-wide crime alert went out after two students and their friends were assaulted Thursday night in Dinkytown.

This weekend brings a swim meet, a hockey game, the Homecoming parade, a men’s basketball event and a huge concert at TCF Bank Stadium. With thousands of additional people on campus, police want to make sure everyone stays safe.

Campus Police say extra officers will be out providing protection at the various events, largely due to Thursday night’s assault near Blarney Pub & Grill.

The Dinkytown neighborhood is considered “off-campus,” so Minneapolis Police are investigating the assaults. Campus Police characterized the incident as an “unprovoked.”

Campus Police sent email alerts to all students, warning them about the violent crime. And Minneapolis Police have set up portable cameras to help keep an eye out.

Students and alumni are on alert, but they’re not letting the attacks stop their homecoming fun.
