MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police say a 19-year-old University of Minnesota student has been arrested and charged in the June hit-and-run accident involving a 24-year-old man.

Tyler Adam Braunschweig was recently taken into custody and charged with felony criminal vehicular operation in the June 27 crash that injured Matthew Call of Arden Hills. Police responded to the hit-and-run accident that day at about 6 p.m. at the intersection of Lyndale Avenue South and 24th Street West.

When authorities arrived, they learned Call had been standing in the street about to get into his parked car on the driver’s side when he was hit from behind by a dark SUV that was traveling northbound on Lyndale Avenue South. Authorities say the SUV did not stop after the accident.

Call was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where doctors determined he suffered two broken legs, a fractured pelvis and broken vertebrae. Police received tips that the person driving the SUV was later identified as Braunschweig, a University of Minnesota student. A passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident also told him to go back to the scene, but he did not.

Authorities located the vehicle after an insurance claim that matched the vehicle in the crash was filed for an accident around the same time that the vehicle hit a deer. Police located the SUV after it had been sold by the insurance company.

Braunschweig is currently in the Hennepin County Jail.
