MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Minnesota state lawmaker is under investigation for a late night incident at a highway rest stop.
Duluth Police say they are looking into what happened at the rest stop involving state Rep. Kerry Gauthier, a first term Democrat from Duluth. The incident occurred on July 22 at a rest area off Highway 35 near Proctor, Minn., just south of Duluth.
The State Patrol reported that a witness approached a trooper at about 11 p.m. to report “suspicious activity.”
That’s when the patrol says it had contact with Gauthier.
But that is all the patrol will say about the incident. And because it was a non-traffic incident, the patrol turned its information over to Duluth Police.
That information is now confidential, because it’s part of an active criminal investigation.
Duluth Police said Wednesday that the matter is still under investigation and it has not been turned over to the county attorney for prosecution.
Gauthier has also not been issued a citation of any kind, police said.
So far, Gauthier has made no comment on the incident and has not returned WCCO-TV’s calls for comment.
And until it knows more, the House DFL Caucus has also declined to comment.
